Black Skimmer, Rynchops nger: Indian Beach, Florida
Black Skimmers are amazing birds. Their lower mandible, much longer than the upper, is held in the water and snaps shut when it comes in contact with prey. The birds at Indian Beach were skimming to catch prey for their nestling. The colony held at least a hundred and fifty pairs of birds that were easily approachable allowing me to take intimate behavioural images.
