Pic of the Day

Vermillion Flycatcher, Pyrocephalus rubinus: Catalina State Park; Tucson, Arizona
The Vermillion Flycatcher is a year round resident of Southern California and Arizona.  I photographed this beautiful male at Catalina State Park while visiting Tucson.  These birds love perching on low hanging branches of mesquite from which they dart into the air to snatch insects.  They are very predictable and move from favorite perch to favorite perch.  After watching them for a while it is easy to determine their pattern and place yourself in the right place to get the shot.  I used my van as a blind to maneuver myself within 20 feet of the bird for this shot.
