Pileated Woodpecker, Dryocopus pileatus:
Horse Cove; near Gurley, Alabama
This was shot in my front yard back in 2006. A pair of birds nested in a dead pine about 300 feet from the house. I spent quite a bit of time photographing the pair. Pileated are a common bird on my property, though this is the only nest I have ever found on my 15 acres tract. I will look for nest this coming April. If I find a nest, you, the viewers of my blog will be the first to know.
